SCSU JRN alumna argues for DEI programs

For Stacy Graham-Hunt, SCSU JRN ’06, diversity, equity and inclusion programs would have made all the difference in her college experience.

In the face of political efforts to dismantle DEI programs in general, and the U.S. Department of Education specifically, Graham-Hunt has used her column writing skills to highlight the impact of such programs.

She recently had a column published in Ms. Magazine highlighting her experience as a first-generation college student. Graham-Hunt recounts her six-year journey through three institutions, academic and financial hurdles, and personal struggles — all of which mirror the systemic barriers many first-generation students face.

Noting fewer than one in three first-generation students graduate in four years, Graham-Hunt argues that diversity, equity, and inclusion programs should be maintained and expanded.
